The first coin in the United States Mint’s American Innovation $1 Coin Program pays tribute to the state of Delaware, home of astronomer Annie Jump Cannon. Among her notable achievements is the creation of the Star Spectra system to classify stars, a system is still in use today. The coin’s distinctive reverse proof finish showcases a silhouette of the astronomer against the night sky, with a number of stars visible. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ANNIE JUMP CANNON,” “CLASSIFYING THE STARS,” and “DELAWARE.” A dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty graces the “heads” side. A unique addition to any collection, and a wonderful gift for science enthusiasts! The coin’s special reverse proof finish inverts the standard proof finish. Coins struck with this unique finish feature a frosted background while all other design elements, including text are polished to a mirror-like finish on both the obverse and reverse sides. Launched in 2018, the United States Mint’s American Innovation $1 Coin Program honors innovators and innovations from each state, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories—Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands. The unique series offers dedicated and casual coin collectors another way to learn—and celebrate—America’s history. A great series to share with kids!
