Afrocentricity in Selected Plays by August Wilson

This book examines selected plays written by the contemporary African American playwright August Wilson (1945-2005) in the light of African American scholar and sociologist Molefi Kete Asante’s theory of Afrocentricity which stands as the writer’s cornerstone of analysis. The book hypothesizes that Wilson’s drama reflects Asante’s Afrocentric theory in a diversity of aspects. This assumption is comprehensively demonstrated through the application of the Afrocentric approach on the final three plays in Wilson’s dramatic cycle: King Hedley II (1999), Gem of the Ocean (2003), and Radio Golf (2005).
