In I See You in There, the author shares story after story in which seeing and believing in the uniqueness of individuals and their surroundings is the magic ingredient to moving forward with communication. We all can learn the ins and outs of communication devices and we also can learn a wide range of therapeutic strategies for the implementation of AAC. This book contains what is missing in much of the literature around supporting individuals with complex communication needs and their families. The reality is, the devices and strategies do not motivate people to communicate. Communication is about the individual connecting with those around them in meaningful ways. I have had the honor of knowing Brenda Robertson Del Monte in a professional and personal capacity throughout her entire 19-year career as an SLP. I have observed her knowledge, skills, and experience in AAC assessment and implementation to be exemplary. I have worked with Brenda in my capacity as an OT and director of a nonprofit in Washington state that coaches school teams and families on AAC assessment and implementation. I have learned from her that an authentic desire to listen, observe and invest in human connection is the key when supporting students and families. This book will cause you to reflect on how you engage and connect with people in both your personal and professional lives. Each of us has a journey, and along the way, we have the possibility to touch and be touched by others in ways that transform. Really seeing the individuals we interact with is where the transformation/magic begins. Kristin Leslie Director, Special Education Technology Center, MAT, OTR/LBrenda is undoubtedly one of the most skilled and caring therapists I have ever worked with. In her many years as an SLP, Brenda has worked with a variety of complex kids and adults, each with their own unique set of communication needs. Brenda’s true skill lies in her ability to combine her exceptional knowledge of language development and access along with her gift of deep human connection. With relationships at the forefront of her decision making, Brenda is able to dynamically problem solve in order to find the best communication system to meet each person’s individual needs . There is never a client who “can’t” when working with Brenda; each and every one finds communication success. To learn from Brenda is truly to learn from the very best that our field has to offer. Elizabeth Freund SLP, MS-CCCBrenda has always seen the potential my son has for communicating.
